We have made many efforts to resolve these negotiations and return to normal functioning. We have had to find a difficult balance, because we also have an obligation to keep the postal service strong and financially viable, not only for today, but also for future generations. In our efforts to find the right balance necessary to reach an agreement, we have done everything in our power to be fair to the staff while being accountable. In accordance with the agreement of the parties, this will be a 4-year collective agreement that will expire on January 31, 2022. Legislation passed by the Canadian government allowed the Canada Post Corporation and the Canadian Postal Workers Union (CUPW) to settle a wage dispute through an interest rate arbitration procedure. Mediation and then arbitration were included in legislation that ended a series of rotating union strikes. The parties had conducted collective bargaining but had not reached an agreement. The Act provides that the Minister of Labour would rule on contentious issues in the interest rate arbitration proceedings. However, the Minister gave the arbitrator the power to make that decision. The arbitrator will also have the power to rule on the terms of the collective agreement. According to CUPW, there is still a mandatory overtime freeze for postal employees. A collective agreement makes a significant contribution to protecting workers from unfair treatment.

This gives us a say in the workplace, allows us to improve our working conditions and provides us with a fair way to address and resolve problems in the workplace. For rural and suburban postal workers, these wage increases apply on January 1 of each year and February 1 for municipal workers. Younger retirees who still worked for Canada Post after the first bump are also entitled to retroactive wage increases. CBCs The Early Edition reached out to Canada Post for feedback on the postal employee contract. They refused « out of respect for the ongoing arbitration. » Jacobs says the working conditions of postal workers have been largely the same since Bill C-89 was passed. There is a clause in the collective agreement for Canada Post employees in which they may be compelled to work overtime. . . .
